A temporary shading and a light structure

Lined by consciously designed ‘social gathering spaces’, titled ‘The Lanterns’ ;  6 units were design and built to create shaded rest areas for food, gathering and workshops during the Amman Design Week public event.

The Billow suspended above were built out of multiple rows of plastic plates that were layered, juxtaposed and hand-sewed to form a body shaped as an inverted vault that is lit from the inside. The thin plastic plates created diiffused the lights in a subtle way to create the lanterns, that are placed as a calling element on the edges of the plaza of the main event.

Suspended in air on a wooden legged structure, the wind transformed these lanterns into animates textiles, animating the light and its shadows underneath.

‘The Lanterns’ also make a statement about general human consumption, creating a mindfulness about our plastic waste.  Each canopy was built using 1,400 plates, the average individual consumption of plastic plates for the coming 5 years.
